Tony Stephens

CEO, MOCA (Museum of Chinese in Australia) - new social history museum that tells the stories & experiences of Chinese Australians

Tony has been an active part of Australia’s arts and cultural sector for over twenty years. Working as a curator, administrator, writer and facilitator, he began his arts career in Brisbane working for a small not-for-profit publisher. From there he went on to be the Chief Executive Officer of Artworkers Alliance, the Director of the now closed Grantpirrie Gallery in Sydney and the Director of Artbank, working with one of the largest collections of Australian art in the world.

For the past three years’, Tony has been involved in the establishment of the Museum of Chinese in Australia; a new kind of museum equally focused on history as well as the contemporary stories of the Chinese and Asian communities in Australia. As the CEO of MOCA, Tony has been building a model for the museum that is contemporary, community connected and accessible, ensuring it is a space for everyone. MOCA is scheduled to open in 2025.
