Kris Nelson is an international cultural leader and Festival Director of Sydney Festival. He led the Festival’s landmark 50th anniversary edition in January 2026 to strong critical acclaim and public response. His debut program celebrated five decades of Sydney Festival while articulating a bold vision for the Festival’s future — one grounded in international collaboration, contemporary Australian storytelling and the transformation of public space into places of imagination, celebration and connection.

Under Kris’s leadership, Sydney Festival 2026 brought together major international
productions, Australian premieres, large-scale participatory works and city-shaping public events. The program reflected his commitment to forging international partnerships, bringing exceptional artists from around the world to Sydney and creating opportunities for Australian artists to develop and present work at an ambitious scale. Highlights included the Australian premieres of Carolyn Gueila Nguyen’s Lacrima, Eun Me Ahn’s Post Orientalist Express, and Joel Bray’s large-scale contemporary ceremony Garabari on the Sydney Opera House Northern Broadwalk, which brought together hundreds of participants in a powerful celebration of First Nations culture and community.

Prior to joining Sydney Festival, Kris spent six and a half years as Artistic Director and CEO of the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT), one of the world’s leading festivals of contemporary performance. There he developed a reputation for presenting bold, innovative and internationally significant work while championing new models of artistic collaboration and exchange. He also established Concept Touring, a pioneering platform exploring more sustainable forms of international cultural collaboration.

Originally from Saskatoon, Canada, Kris has worked internationally across major arts festivals and cultural organisations for more than a decade. He previously served as Festival Director of Dublin Fringe Festival and is recognised for championing ambitious artistic experiences that connect local audiences with global ideas and artists.
