Justin Paton

Chief Curator, Art Gallery of New South Wales - on the record breaking 'Mike Hewson's: Keys Under the Mat' and the rise and rise of experiential art

Justin Paton is Chief curator at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, and curator of Mike Hewson's acclaimed The Key's Under the Mat, an 'anarchic underground art park' in the Nelson Packer Tank which has been visited by more than 600,000 people. Across a decade at the Art Gallery, Justin's projects have included Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day?, the inaugural Sydney Modern exhibition Dreamhome: Stories of Art & Shelter, and the major outdoor installation by Francis Upritchard, Here Comes Everybody. Justin's longstanding interest in responsive and outward-looking art museum programming is evident in Outer Spaces, the program of art presented by Christchurch Art Gallery in post-earthquake Christchurch, and Together In Art, an online project launched by the Art Gallery during its closure in 2020 due to the pandemic. Justin is an acclaimed author and recipient of the Katherine Mansfield Fellowship for writers whose books include How to Look at a Painting (2005), McCahon Country (2019) and the forthcoming Louise Bourgeois: In the Studio (2026).
