Gordon Young Editor-in-chief & Co-Founder, The Drum

I was one of the founders of the Carnyx Group in 1985 which publishes the media and marketing journal The Drum, legal magazine The Firm and building design title Prospect. In addition I have launched numerous events including The Roses Design Awards, The Scottish Advertising Awards, the Scottish Design Awards and the Law Awards of Scotland. I also set up The Carbuncle Awards (www.thecarbuncles.co.uk) which aims to identify the most dismal places in Scotland, and The Chip Shop Awards (www.chipshopawards.com) an international alternative to advertising and design shows. It features work which sometimes has not even run and has categories like the Best Use of Bad Taste and Best Work for a Relative or Friend. Underpinning these operations are three highly successful websites, www.thedrum.co.uk. www.architecturescotland.co.uk and www.thefirmmagazine.co.uk. I believe the future of publishing lies in the social networking model. That is why we recently launched www.MarketingIndustryNetwork.com which aims to facilitate the sharing of knowledge across The Drums database. We also has launched an organisation for architects who have had a building demolished in their own lifetime. You can find out more information on that at www.rubbleclub.com. I have also been involved with a host of projects over the last few years including founding The Glaswegian, which was acquired by Mirror Group Newspapers, and the National Business Awards of Scotland, which is now part of the United News and Media stable. Another one of my more recent ventures was helping to found the Recommended Agency Register (www.agencyresgister.co.uk), an organisation that aims to bring marketing clients and agencies together.
