Gabby Malpas
Visual Artist
Gabby Malpas is a graduate of the Otago Art School, Dunedin NZ, with a major in ceramics (1986). She considers and challenges the genre of Chinoiserie through her own narrative as a Chinese adoptee raised by white parents in New Zealand, reclaiming her heritage later in life.
Working across paper, canvas and ceramics, her works are made with longevity and the environment in mind, using recycled clays and embracing imperfections as a pushback against manufactured perfection. A proud maximalist, she currently lives and works on Gadigal land of the Eora Nation, Sydney, Australia.
